"We trained hard, but it seemed every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganised. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganising, and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency and demoralisation."
- Attributed to a Roman General in 66AD who later committed suicide.
Towards the end of a financial year, companies typically kickstart the annual reorganization routine where people get moved around. From absolute performance to down right sycophancy, it is that fun time to see who is getting what.
Apart from the fact that it manages to change the comfort level of people all around, little is the real impact of these changes in the normal course of business. Of course, there are rare exceptions. And for some part of the organization, the end result is as that described by the wise Roman General.
There is an unexpected round of reorganization happening at my work place and it is to be seen how it ends.

I love that 66 BC quote. Some times it makes you wonder that fundamental human, social problems remain intractable despite vast transformative changes in the environment we live in. And some new problems are created by the change as well.
Reorg a dreaded five letter word in every organization. I have seen this too much in detroit with its ailing automobile industries. I am not sure how successful it is but it does drain the energy and motivation of the employees who get caught in the reorg. I think sometimes people make a change for the sake of change. Some of the reorg are trying to fix something which is not broke
